ZWO ASI294MM Pro

The ASI294MM Pro is a cooled monochrome astronomy camera using the Sony IMX492 sensor. Its 19.1 × 13 mm imaging area records 8288 × 5644 pixels with 2.3 µm pixels and a native 12-bit ADC.

Imaging performance

ZWO specifies 14,400 electrons full-well capacity, peak quantum efficiency of 90% and read noise of 1.3–2.6 (manufacturer table) electrons. The listed capture rate is 5.7 fps at unlocked Bin1; actual transfer speed depends on image size, ADC/output mode and USB connection. Monochrome imaging allows separate luminance, colour and narrowband exposures using suitable external filters.

Cooling and data transfer

Two-stage TEC cooling reduces thermal signal during long exposures. The manufacturer cooling specification is Two-stage TEC; 30–35 °C below ambient, tested at 30 °C ambient. A 512 MB DDR3 buffer and USB 3.0 connection support reliable downloads.

Connections and power

The camera connection is M42 × 0.75, with sensor spacing of 6.5 mm bare; adapter rings add spacing. The protective window is AR-coated window. Use a 12 V DC, 3–5 A supply with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm centre-positive connector; the recommended battery range is 11–14 V. Include adapters and any filter wheel when calculating telescope backfocus.

Two sampling modes

Unlocked Bin1 provides the highest pixel count at 2.3 µm and 12-bit ADC. Bin2 provides 4144 × 2822 sampling at approximately 4.6 µm, 14-bit ADC and approximately 66 ke full well. Resolution, bit depth and full well must be compared within the same mode.
